Dead & Company Offers Live Debut As Part Of Boston Finale

On Sunday night Dead & Company returned to TD Garden in Boston for their second of two shows at the home of the Bruins and Celtics. The big story of the night was the Dead & Company debut of one of Bob Weir’s final Grateful Dead originals, “Corinna.”

Weir started off the evening with his Sunday sermon, “Samson & Delilah.” John Mayer then led the group through “Dire Wolf” and “Cold Rain & Snow” ahead of a Weir-sung “Loser.” From there, Bob trotted out “Corrina” for the first time on a Dead & Company stage. “Corrina” was debuted by the Grateful Dead early in 1992 and was a staple through Jerry’s death. Weir picked up the song with Ratdog and played it over a hundred times with that outfit through 2014. Sunday’s first set concluded with a perky “Here Comes Sunshine” and the second-ever D&C “Greatest Story Ever Told.”

As is tradition, the second set was a more improv-fueled affair. Dead & Company began the frame with a jammy “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know Your Rider.” Bassist Oteil Burbridge then had his turn in the spotlight to sing the tour’s first “Comes A Time.” Mayer then showed off his Jerry-inspired licks and stayed away from the blues during “Playing In The Band.” An image of late AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young was projected behind the band eliciting huge cheers from the crowd. “Playing” eventually led into the evening’s adventurous “Drums” segment featuring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.

The set continued with the instrumentalists returning for a foray into “Space.” Weir then stepped to the front to lead the group on a powerful “Morning Dew.” Bobby continued his time in the spotlight for “I Need A Miracle” ahead of the “Casey Jones” set closer. For the encore, Dead & Company said fare thee well with “Brokedown Palace” and then finished “Playing In The Band.” Next up for the group is a visit to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday night.
