Dead & Company closed out their six-show Fall Fun Run with just their second-ever performance at Hampton Coliseum in Virginia after making their debut at “The Mothership” the night before. D&C had some tricks up there sleeves for the second set of the fall tour closer.
Dead & Company kicked off the first set by jamming into “Truckin.'” Guitarist Bob Weir had a bit of trouble on the opening verse but recovered after a classic Bobby “oh shit.” “Big Railroad Blues” came next which saw lead guitarist John Mayer handling vocal duties. Mayer and Weir sang “He’s Gone” which then led into a Weir fronted “Tennessee Jed.” Bobby shouldered an acoustic for “Friend Of The Devil” and joined Mayer on vocals. The guitarists then sang “Birdsong” before heading into the first set closer “One More Saturday Night.”
It was in the second set that things got interesting. The continuous set got underway with “Playing In The Band” followed by a Mayer led “Franklin’s Tower.” Next, Bobby sang “Scarlet Begonias” and Mayer took over lead vocal duties on “Fire On The Mountain.” Bassist Oteil Burbridge had sung the song since 2016. Mayer has featured the song in his solo shows.
Oteil, however, got his chance to shine when he took a seat behind the kit on “Drums.” After “Space,” the band dusted off their cover of Miles Davis’ “Milestones” for just the third time and the first time in nearly two years (November 17, 2017). Mayer led everyone on “Uncle John’s Band,” which contained a “Playing” reprise. Bobby stepped back to the mic for the poignant “Black Peter” ahead of the second set closer “Sugar Magnolia.”
Weir and Mayer both donned acoustic guitars for the encore of “Ripple,” bookending the tour with the Grateful Dead classic (they opened with the tune on Halloween at MSG). Listen to the full show taped by Alex Leary and check out pro-shot video of “Truckin'” and “Playing In The Band” below:
