Dawes & Stu Allen Cover Grateful Dead At Terrapin Crossroads

Dawes played Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh‘s Terrapin Crossroads venue on Saturday, where the group recruited a Terrapin regular to assist on a Grateful Dead cover. Guitarist Stu Allen augmented Dawes on a cover of the Dead’s “Shakedown Street” as part of the band’s second set at the San Rafael, California venue.

Frontman Taylor Goldsmith handled lead vocals on the title track from the Dead’s 1978 studio album. Allen provided a filthy guitar solo and also sang harmony. While Goldsmith and some of his band mates have discussed their appreciation of the Grateful Dead in the past, Saturday marked the group’s first performance of a Dead song as per Setlist.FM.

Dawes played 23 songs at Terrapin Crossroads spanning two sets. They put a focus on 2015’s All Your Favorite Bands as five tracks from the LP made the setlist. Goldsmith and company also fit in three tunes from their recent record, Passwords. The concert came to a close with a pairing of the beloved favorites “When My Time Comes” and “All Your Favorite Bands.”
