Friday was a big day for David Byrne as he released American Utopia, his first non-collaborative solo album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. To celebrate the occasion the former Talking Heads frontman was the musical guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert where he delivered a unique performance of the album’s lead track that not only weaved its way around the Ed Sullivan Theater but also featured the show’s host lending a hand.

Byrne with the help of his large touring ensemble made the most out of their untethered set up as it allowed them to move throughout the late night talk show set. The multi-piece band started stage left then moved over to interview area, where Colbert was seated and joined in on the coordinated choreography. Bryne & Co. then made their way off the stage and into the audience as they worked their way up and down the aisle and eventually back to the stage where Colbert was seated at a kitchen table to help sing the song’s final verse.
