David Byrne Performs ‘Road To Nowhere’ On ‘Fallon’

By Scott Bernstein Nov 20, 2019 6:33 am PST

David Byrne brought the cast from his American Utopia Broadway show across town to 30 Rock for a performance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. Byrne not only led the ensemble on the Talking Heads classic “Road To Nowhere,” he only sat for an interview with Jimmy that included a dance lesson.

In keeping with David Byrne’s American Utopia in which the musicians perform untethered with no amps or anything but their instruments holding them back, Byrne and company stomped around the entirety of the Tonight Show stage in marching band style. The members of the band were barefoot and pulled off choreographed maneuvers throughout the rendition of the song from Talking Heads’ 1985 studio album Little Creatures. The Roots got in on the action at the end of “Road To Nowhere” by joining in with percussive instruments.

Earlier in the episode, David Byrne rode his bike to Jimmy’s desk for the interview segment. The New York City residents spoke about David Byrne’s American Utopia and then David taught Jimmy a few dance moves while The Roots played “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)”.
