Students at McDonogh City Park Academy in New Orleans had the thrill of a lifetime yesterday, when Dave Matthews and Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews came to their classroom. The pair talked to the youngsters about their dreams and performed for them.
Both Matthews and Andrews will play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival this weekend. Their appearance was put together by Turnaround Arts, a program that aims to use the arts to create success in struggling schools. McDonogh City Park Academy is a Pre-K through 8th grade public charter located in New Orleans’ MidCity neighborhood and is part of the ReNew network. A few videos of Dave and Trombone Shorty performing for cultural arts academy students have surfaced.
