Dave Matthews Band played Royal Albert Hall for the first time on Wednesday. Opening night of the group’s two-show run at the historic London venue featured a surprise guest appearance from guitarist Robben Ford.
Ford made his Dave Matthews Band debut late in last night’s main set. The renowned guitarist has performed and recorded with a who’s who of musicians over the past +50-years including Miles Davis, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Phil Lesh, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and endless others. “Some of you may know Robben and some of you may not know but all of you have heard him play,” Matthews told the crowd.

Robben Ford emerged to accompany the septet on “Satellite.” The guitarist added tasteful licks and unleashed a fierce solo on the classic from DMB’s 1994 debut studio album, Under The Table And Dreaming. “That shit was nasty!” Dave Matthews exclaimed after “Satellite” before discussing Ford’s credentials. “It’s such an honor to have him on stage with us.”
Dave Matthews Band kept Ford on stage for “Jimi Thing.” The adventurous version of the fan-favorite was filled with fretboard fireworks from Robben Ford. Saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trumpeter Rashawn Ross delivered powerful solos of their own to punctuate “Jimi Thing.”
