Dave Matthews Band continued their European trek on Thursday at the Palladium in Cologne, Germany. DMB had some tricks in store for “Lie In Our Graves,” reprising the live staple for the first time since 2019.

Dave Matthews and company — drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, guitarist Tim Reynolds, trumpeter Rashwan Ross, saxophonist Jeff Coffin and keyboardist Buddy Strong — launched the Cologne concert with Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain.”

“Old Dirt Hill (Bring That Beat Back”) — off the band’s 2005 LP, Stand UP — followed. The early part of the main set also saw a pairing of classics “Dancing Nancies” and “Warehouse,” as well as songs off the band’s latest album Walk Around The Moon: “Madman’s Eyes” and “Monsters.”

“Lie In Our Graves” fell in the 13th song slot and instead of perforning the complete song, the band followed with “Come On Come On” from their 2018 album, Come Tomorrow. The set ended with a pairing of “Why I Am” and classic closer “Ants Marching.”

Dave returned to begin the encore with the solo acoustic Walk Around The Moon cut, “Something To Tell My Baby.” The rest of the band then joined to finish up “Live In Our Graves.” The so-called “reprise” usually comes after the gorgeous instrumental section and contains the lyric “lie in our graves.” The reprise is really just the end of the track appearing on 1996’s Crash, although it has been separated from the main song and even dropped in the past, requiring a distinction in live settings.

As per DMBAlmanac:

While the reprise has sporadically been dropped over the years, starting at 8.22.2007, the band occasionally played it in a different slot from the main song. The reprise has twice been played at a show where the main body of the song has not been played: here and here (9.2.2007 and 9.18.2011); Both of these instances occurred on the third night of a 3-night venue run where the main body of the song was played without reprise on the first night.

The last time DMB broke up the tune came on April 3, 2019 in Italy on their last European Tour. After concluding “Lie In Our Graves,” Dave Matthews Band capped the concert with “Grey Street.”
