Dave Matthews Band Honor Dr. John With Preservation Hall Jazz Band In Wisconsin

Dave Matthews Band was in East Troy, Wisconsin for a pair of shows at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre on Friday and Saturday. The venerable jam act teamed with Preservation Hall Jazz Band both nights, which included the debut of a cover of Dr. John’s “Right Place, Wrong Time” during the opening night of the run.

Friday show saw Dave Matthews & Co. deliver old-school classics like “Warehouse,” “Dancing Nancies,” “What Would You Say,” “Two Step” and “Ants Marching.” During the midpoint of their 19-song main-set, DMB welcomed Preservation Hall Jazz Band as they paid tribute to Dr. John, who passed away last month at age 77. The ad-hoc ensemble teamed for on a take on “Right Place, Wrong Time” the lead track from the New Orleans icon’s 1973 LP In The Right Place. According to the setlist site DMB Almanac, Matthews had last performed the song all the way back in 1993 a member of the Charlottesville Allstars.

On Saturday, the Dave Matthews Band looked to some lesser-played songs from their current run serving up takes on “Stay Or Leave,” “#27,” “JTR,” and “Recently” along with tour debut of “Stay Or Leave.” Preservation Hall Jazz Band also returned for a collaborative take on “Louisiana Bayou.”
