Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown Tour is nearly complete after a cross-country run featuring headliners Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and other New Orleans-based acts such as Galactic and Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Saturday’s stop at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles was a special one as Dave Grohl performed with both Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Grohl first emerged during Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s set. The Foo Fighters frontman showed off his versatility by engaging in a drum duel with the group’s drummer Walter Harris and also singing with Charlie Gabriel. Dave and Charlie teamed up to lead Preservation Hall Jazz Band through “Come With Me” from 2013’s That’s It!
Another highlight of the night came when Grohl performed a Nirvana classic with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Dave hopped on drums from an instrumental rendition of “In Bloom,” which as Consequence of Sound noted, is only the second time the Nirvana drummer played the song since Kurt Cobain’s death.
New Breed Brass Band began the night before the Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s set. Dave Grohl wasn’t the group’s only guest as Kermit Ruffins added to “When My Dream Boat Comes Home” and “What A Wonderful World.” Next came a performance from Galactic that included vocalist Erica Falls leading the band on “Clap Your Hands,” “Dolla Diva” and “Heart Of Steel.” Falls was also on hand to join Galactic and Walter “Wolfman” Washington on “Even Now” and “Going Down Slowly.” Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue closed out the evening with a set featuring the aforementioned “In Bloom” with Dave Grohl. Cyril Neville was also among the guests for the final set of the L.A. Threauxdown.
