Seventeen years ago today quintessential Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra began their first of four weekly performances run at Chicago’s Martyrs’. All these years the later the band now has 2,379 shows under their belts, which is more than the Grateful Dead performed over a 30-year span. DSO starts a fall tour tomorrow in Buffalo and have revealed an interesting lineup swap that will take place at two upcoming performances.

Dark Star Orchestra bassist Skip Vangelas will be unable to perform with the group on November 21 (Lupo’s in Providence, RI) and November 22 (The Dome at Oakdale in Wallingford, CT). The band has called upon keyboardist Jeff Chimenti (Furthur, RatDog, The Dead) to share the stage with them at the two shows Vangelas will miss. DSO’s regular keyboardist, Rob Barraco, will hold down the bass role for these performances.

Following a busy end of 2014 and start to 2015, DSO will host Jam In The Sand III at Grand Lido Negril in Negril, Jamaica from February 27 to March 3. David Nelson Band, Grateful Grass and Keller Williams are among the acts set to join Dark Star Orchestra at the all-inclusive event. Room packages and more details are available here.
