Circles Around The Sun and Mikaela Davis clocked a Live On KEXP session back in August. The musicians came to the independent radio station’s Seattle studios to perform songs from their collaborative EP, After Sunrise, and more.
After Sunrise arrived in April 2024. Harpist Mikaela Davis and Circles Around The Sun — guitarist John Lee Shannon, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, drummer Mark Levy and bassist Dan Horne — have toured together around the record in 2024 and 2025.
The quintet came to KEXP studios on August 21 ahead of a show at Seattle’s Nectar Lounge. Circles Around The Sun went it alone to kick off the session with a space-funk excursion on “Hot Pursuit,” a track set for the quartet’s upcoming album Interludes For The Dead: Volume 2. The LP is a sequel to the band’s first recording with late guitarist Neal Casal, which was written for the setbreak music of the Grateful Dead‘s Fare Thee Well 50th Anniversary concerts in 2015.
Mikaela then added enchanting harp and vocals to “After Sunrise,” a cover of legendary Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes. The session came to a close with another track off After Sunrise, “Moonbow.”
