Comedian Carrot Top is a longtime friend of Georgia rockers Widespread Panic dating back more than 30 years, when both artists were coming up through the ranks in the deep south. Carrot Top is also a skilled percussionist who has sat-in with Panic 22 times between 1997 and 2018. One of those guest appearances took place 19 years ago tonight as Carrot Top aided Todd Nance and Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz on “Drums” at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

“Back in the lean glory days—late ’80s and early ’90s—Carrot Top and us would play in the same club in South Carolina. We’d almost always share dressing rooms. We noticed that somebody had been drinking our beer and eating our food, and we couldn’t figure out who was doing it. So we set a trap [with beer] and caught Carrot Top coming into our dressing room munching on our grub. That’s how we met. To this day, it’s always fun to go to Vegas, check him out and have him come to our shows,” Ortiz told Vegas Seven in 2014 about Panic’s friendship with Carrot Top.
