Built to Spill released a cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Mountain Top.” The rendition will appear on the Bosie-based band’s upcoming album, Built To Spill Plays The Songs of Daniel Johnston, featuring tunes from the legendary cult singer-songwriter and artist, due out on June 12 through Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Sadly, Johnston died in 2019 from a heart attack. BtS bandleader Doug Martsch recorded the tribute album with bassist Jason Albertini and drummer Steve Gere while the trio rehearsed as Johnston’s backing band a few years back. “It was pretty special for us,” Martsch told Rolling Stone on playing with Johnston. “It was a lot heavier than what I thought it would be,” he added.
