Bruce Springsteen held down his usual slot performing at the Stand Up For Heroes benefit on Monday at New York City’s David Geffen Hall. The Boss played four songs solo acoustic and told a handful of dirty jokes at the fundraiser for the Bob Woodruff Foundation as part of a lineup that also included Amber Iman, The Lumineers, Hasan Minhaj, Jeff Ross, Iliza Shlesinger and Jon Stewart.

Springsteen came out to perform at the event featuring an audience filled with servicemen and servicewomen and immediately told his first joke. “During sex, you burn off as many calories as if you ran eight miles,” Bruce quipped. “But who can run eight miles in 30 seconds? Got that off the internet.”

Bruce kicked off his set with Letter To You gem “House Of A Thousand Guitars,” which he dubbed “my state of the union.” He then looked to his 2007 LP, Magic, for “I’ll Work For Your Love” before returning to 2020’s Letter To You with “I’ll See You In My Dreams.” Along the way he cracked more one-liners. “Why does it take 100 million sperm to fertilize one egg?” Springsteen pondered. “Because, like all men, they won’t stop to ask directions.”

“I’ve been here for 16 years,” Springsteen said before starting his final song. “It’s always an honor to be here with our men and women in uniform who have given us so much.” The New Jersey native then launched into an intimate unplugged rendition of his 1984 hit “Dancing In The Dark” to close his appearance.
