Steven Van Zandt Weighs In On Bruce Springsteen’s Future Amid Retirement Rumors

After Bruce Springsteen was forced to postpone tour and concerts due to health concerns, speculation swirled amongst fans that The Boss might retire when he ends his current tour with the E Street Band. Springsteen’s lead guitarist Steven Van Zandt adressed the topic in a recent interview.

Thoughts of the 74-year-old rock icon ending his career was also prompted by “a narrative vein of looming mortality running through recent Springsteen albums,” according to The Telegraph. Additionally, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concerts are high-impact affairs often running near three hours without a break.

The good news is while Bruce Springsteen’s vocal issues led Springsteen to postpone a series of four shows in May, they have been rescheduled for May and June 2025. So at the absolute least, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will continue to tour for the next year.

“You never know,” Van Zandt told The Telegraph when asked about the potential of Springsteen retiring. “I mean, we treat every show like it could be the last show, and we’ve been doing that for 50 years. But the audience is still there, and we can see them getting younger every year.

“I don’t see the end anywhere in sight, to be honest, especially in Europe, where we’re bigger than we’ve ever been,” Van Zandt added. “I think we can play every summer for evermore, man. I love that the Stones are still out there. Because as long as they’re out there, man, we’re still the new kids on the block, right? So I’m good with that.”

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band wrapped up the 2024 European and UK leg of their tour last week with two concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium. The Boss and his longtime backing ensemble kick off the North American portion of the trek on August 15 in Pittsburgh.
