Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Brendan Bayliss played a special solo concert on the patio at the intimate Teddy O’Brian’s in Highwood, Illinois on Sunday in honor of the late Jeff Austin. Bayliss mixed songs from his 30db project with Austin, Umphrey’s originals and choice covers including “Lifeboy” by Phish and Grateful Dead gems “Sugaree” and “Ripple.” All proceeds from the concert went to Jeff’s family.

Bayliss, who welcomed members of his family including his wife and brother, along with other guests, at various points of the night opened with 30db tunes “One Man Show” and “Liar.” His first set also featured such songs as CSN’s “4 + 20,” Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” Bob Dylan’s “Mama, You Have Been On My Mind” as well as the aforementioned versions of “Lifeboy” and “Sugaree.”

Brendan kicked off the second set with UM’s “Cut The Cable” and later had each of his children join him one at a time for Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds,” The Beatles’ “Blackbird” and his own “Brushing My Teeth.” 30db songs in the closing stanza included “Backfire” and “Susanah.” Towards the end of the set, Brendan’s brother performed “Two Of Us” by The Beatles with him before the UM guitarist capped the frame with Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian” and Otis Redding’s “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay.” For the encore, Brendan treated the small crowd to “Ripple.”
