Branford Marsalis Guests With Govt Mule & John Scofield
By Scott Bernstein Mar 4, 2015 • 6:00 am PST

Mule started off the show by themselves for romps through four heavy rotation staples including “Lay Your Burden Down” and “Thorazine Shuffle.” Scofield emerged five songs in for a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Instrumental Illness” and takes on his own “Jeep On 35” and “Hottentot.” Gov’t Mule and John Scofield came out for the second set with Marsalis in tow. Branford last appeared with Gov’t Mule at the Christmas Jam in 2006. The second set began with a bevy of classic rock covers performed by Marsalis, Scofield & Gov’t Mule, namely The Band’s “The Shape I’m In,” Traffic’s “Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” and “Dreams” by The Allman Brothers Band. Warren Haynes & Co. then brought the set to a close with a pair of guest-less, song sandwiches: “Mule” > “I’ve Been Working” > “Mule” and “Soulshine” > “Tupelo Honey” > “Soulshine.” For the encore, Gov’t Mule treated fans to a version of a song best associated with John Coltrane, “Afro Blue,” featuring Scofield, Marsalis and keyboardist Joey Calderazzo.
