Guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer was the “Artist-at-Large” for the 2018 SweetWater 420 Fest at Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park this past weekend. Taz sat-in with The String Cheese Incident on Friday and the Tedeschi Trucks Band on Saturday as well as played his own set. On Sunday, he was a constant presence on the main stage. The youngster made guest appearances with Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Greensky Bluegrass and Umphrey’s McGee.
Taz’s day started when he joined Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds for a cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Dr. Feelgood.” Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds are gearing up to play all of Franklin’s Live At Fillmore West LP on Thursday at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. Michigan-based jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass took the SweetWater Stage next on Sunday and mixed fan-favorite originals such as “The Four,” “Living Over,” “Kerosene” and “Leap Year” with a handful of choice covers. Niederauer emerged to add to GSBG’s cover of “Midnight Rider” by the Allman Brothers Band.
Vulfpeck was the penultimate band to play the main stage on Sunday. The group was augmented by guitarist Cory Wong and welcomed vocalist Antwaun Stanley at points. Vulf treated the Atlanta fans to a career-spanning set that included such staples as “1612,” “Christmas In L.A.,” “Dean Town” and “Back Pocket.” Umphrey’s McGee was expected to play two sets, but with bad weather looming decided to play one long set. The six-piece opened with a run of “Half Delayed,” “Remind Me” and “Booth Love.” UM then jammed “Mantis” into “Wife Soup” before they brought out Taz, who lit up a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny.”
The Umphrey’s set rolled on with “Draconian” ahead of the conclusion of “Mantis.” A pair of heavy hitters, “Wappy Sprayberry” and “Ringo,” brought the set to a close. Umphrey’s returned to begin their encore with a take on Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain.” The band hadn’t performed the Zeppelin cover since August 20, 2016. “Ocean Billy” and “The Silent Type” then closed out UM’s three-song encore and the main stage action at the 2018 SweetWater 420 Fest.
