The latest episode of Phish lyricist Tom Marshall’s Under The Scales podcast features a chat with nugs.net founder Brad Serling. Tom and co-host RJ Bee chat with Brad about the past, present and future of nugs.net which powers LivePhish.com and other official audio and video websites.

Serling begins by discussing what led him to register the nugs.net domain in 1997 and launch the site in 1998. He then explains how a call in 2000 from a lawyer who represented Phish and the Grateful Dead marked a major turning point in the company’s history. Brad, Tom & RJ talk about the difficulties of licensing, the decisions of which shows get webcast, how the company deals with bandwidth issues, piracy and additional topics.

Brad Serling also broke a few pieces of news within his appearance on Under The Scales. Serling revealed LivePhish.com will host multiple free streams this summer. The episode was recorded at the start of tour and one of those free webcasts already took place. Additionally, Brad mentioned nugs.net/LivePhish.com is aiming to offer a 4K resolution option for Phish’s Curveball festival that would be the company’s first actual pay-per-view live in 4K.
