Brad Mehldau was the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday. The pianist and an all-star band offered a cover of “Colorbars” from Mehldau’s upcoming Elliott Smith tribute album, Ride into the Sun, arriving August 29 through Nonesuch Records.
To capture Ride into the Sun, Mehldau assembled an all-star band including guitarist/vocalist Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, mandolinist/vocalist Chris Thile of Punch Brothers/Nickel Creek, bassists Felix Moseholm and John Davis, drummer Matt Chamberlain and a Dan Coleman-led chamber orchestra.
Thile, Moseholm and Chamberlain joined Mehldau for his performance on Kimmel yesterday. The quartet covered Elliott Smith’s “Colorbars,” which originally appears on the influential late singer-songwriter’s final LP, 2000’s Figure 8, released before his death in 2003.
