welcomed a number of friends, including Weir’s Dead & Company bandmate guitarist John Mayer, to guest at their Tuesday night concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Harmonica player Matthew Kelly and guitarist Matty Michna also sat-in during last night’s show.
The core band featuring guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, drummer Jay Lane and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti began the latest stop of Wolf Bros’ fall tour with Kelly on harmonica for “Ramble On Rose.” Kelly, who joined the band earlier this month in San Francisco for a three-night stand, contributed harp throughout the evening. The harmonica player shined on covers of Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs To Me” and Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” that filled the two- and three-slots last night.
Tuesday’s first set rolled on with the six musicians offering a heartfelt “Brown-Eyed Women” before The Wolfpack horn and string section made their initial appearance of the night on the geographically-appropriate “West L.A. Fadeaway.” Young guitarist/vocalist Matty Michna then emerged for a wild “Eyes Of The World” segment to cap the frame. “Eyes” bled into “Big Sandy Creek,” a song with words by late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter for which Michna wrote the music. Matty sang “Big Sandy Creek,” while Bobby helmed the ensuing take on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” that gave way to an “Eyes” reprise.
John Mayer contributed to the full second set as well as the evening’s encore. Bobby Weir And Wolf Bros, The Wolfpack, Mayer and Kelly delivered a 14-minute “Shakedown Street” to get the closing stanza underway. The full ensemble then jammed on “Dark Star” for over 15 minutes with Bobby singing the first verse. Next came the oft-paired “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” before the group returned to “Dark Star” territory for the second verse of the psychedelic era gem.
The improv-heavy set continued with an adventurous “The Other One” in which multiple members of The Wolfpack took rousing solos. Last night’s “Other One” was connected to “Standing On The Moon” by a Jeff Chimenti piano solo. Weir and Mayer looked on with huge smiles as their Dead & Company bandmate uncorked a beautiful piece to tie the two songs together. While The Wolfpack left for “Standing On The Moon,” they returned for the set-closing “Sugar Magnolia.” Bobby and John went acoustic for the evening’s “Ripple” encore.
