Among the many musical collaborators of bassist Rob Wasserman – who sadly died this week at age 64 – perhaps his best-known cohort was Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir. As detailed yesterday, Wasserman created music with a diverse assortment of musicians during his well-respected career, but his time playing alongside Bobby is the focus of this installment of Full Show Friday.
“I’m devastated to pass along that Rob Wasserman lost his struggle today, and we have lost a beautiful friend and artist,” Weir wrote. “I can still hear the sound of his bow playing those strings unamplified and pure. It’s one of the most glorious sounds I’ve ever heard, and the music and warmth he gave us will live on in the hearts of everyone he touched.”
Bobby also tweeted: “One of the world’s most beautiful friends and artists has left us. May Rob’s warmth and music live in your hearts as it always has in mine.”
Prior to helping Weir found RatDog, the pair of musicians teamed up for a number of duo performances. Below is video from the Bob & Rob show on September 3, 1989 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. Opening for Jerry Garcia Band, the video captures renditions of “Blackbird,” “Walking Blues,” “City Girls,” “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” “Victim Or The Crime,” a Wasserman bass solo and more.
