Bob Weir Returns & Jeff Chimenti Guests With SCI To Close Out Los Muertos Con Queso

The inaugural Los Muertos con Queso destination festival concluded on Saturday at the Barceló Maya in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann’s new project played two sets after SCI performed two sets of their own. The big news was Weir’s return to the stage after he was unable to perform with the band on Thursday night due to food poisoning.

Up first was two sets from The String Cheese Incident. The band opened with “Search” and included such favorites as “MLT,” “Water” and “Jellyfish” in the first set as well as covers of “Catfish John” and “Whiskey Before Breakfast.” A “Song In My Head” > “Come As You Are” pairing kicked off a second set that saw keyboardist Jeff Chimenti guest on “Outside & Inside” and featured SCI’s cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).” The “Come As You Are” included teases of the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street.”

Weir recovered from his bout of food poisoning to take the stage with Kreutzmann, Chimenti, Tom Hamilton and Dave Schools. Bobby immediately took the lead as he fronted the group on the “Playing In The Band” opener. Next up was a Hamilton and Weir-fronted “Lady With A Fan” > “Terrapin Station” before the band welcomed Jackie Greene for “New Speedway Boogie.” From there, the five-piece ended the first set with rarities “Mission In The Rain” and “My Brother Esau” as well as “Brown Eyed Women,” “Let It Grow” and the reprise of “Playin’.”

Bob Weir was in the spot light for nearly the entire second set as he led the group through the “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance” sequence as well as a “Dark Star” that included a guest spot from Jason Crosby. The evening’s “Drums” section saw Billy joined by SCI’s Jason Hann and Michael Travis and came in the middle of “Dark Star.” Weir had a tender moment leading “Wharf Rat” ahead of a euphoric “Not Fade Away” set-closer. Los Muertos con Queso concluded with the five-piece’s take on “Brokedown Palace.”
