A free public gathering to commemorate the life and legacy of late Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir will be held in his hometown of San Francisco this Saturday, January 17. “Homecoming: Celebrating the life of Bobby Weir” will start at 12:45 p.m. PT at Civic Center Plaza.

“This is a free public gathering honoring Bobby, whose music, spirit and humanity shaped generations,” according to a press release from organizers. “Together, we will pay tribute in the community and collective heartbeat that he created.” The event is also described as ” A hat tip on his way out, if you will…”

“Homecoming” won’t feature any live musical performances. Instead, “the gathering will center on gratitude, remembrance, and togetherness, along with special tributes to honor Bobby.” Multiple speakers are expected, including San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie.

A procession will travel three blocks down Market Street between 7th and 9th Streets at approximately 12:30 p.m. PT leading up to the event at Civic Center Plaza. Fans are urged to enter Civic Center Plaza through Fulton Plaza. Follow this link to RSVP for the free event.

Bob Weir's death at age 78 was announced through a statement last Saturday, January 10. The Grateful Dead co-founding guitarist died from lung issues after he beat cancer. Weir was diagnosed with cancer in July 2025 and started treatment ahead of a series of three Dead & Company concerts celebrating 60 years of Grateful Dead music at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The shows on August 1 – 3, 2025 marked Bobby’s final public performances.
