Bob Weir Guests With Green Leaf Rustlers At Sweetwater Run Finale
A brief run of Green Leaf Rustlers‘ shows at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California came to a close on Thursday with help from one of the venue’s proprietors. Grateful Dead/Dead & Company guitarist Bob Weir wound up sitting in on three songs at the start of the Rustlers’ second set at Sweetwater.
The all-star band finds Chris Robinson joined by drummer John Molo, bassist Pete Sears, guitarist Greg Loiacono and multi-instrumentalist Barry Sless. Loiacono was on the road with The Mother Hips, so the Green Leaf Rustlers tapped Isaiah Mitchell of Earthless to perform on Thursday.
Bob Weir emerged at the start of the evening’s second set. Up first for the Weir/Rustlers collaboration were a pair of Grateful Dead classics: “They Love Each Other” and “West L.A. Fadeaway.” The Green Leaf Rustlers then were led by Weir on Bobby Womack’s “It’s All Over Now,” a song that the Dead covered through their final days.
Thursday’s show saw the Green Leaf Rustlers continue to present a diverse mix of covers spanning multiple genres. Robinson & Co.’s first set featured such songs as Townes Van Zandt’s “Standin’,” Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th Street” and The Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star.” Green Leaf Rustlers followed Bob Weir’s guest spot with more throwback tunes including Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” J.J. Cale’s “Ride Me High” and “Big Mouth Blues” by Gram Parsons. The band said farewell with an encore of the New Riders’ “Whatcha Gonna Do.”
