Bob Marley & The Wailers Bring ‘Uprising’ Tour To Dortmund In 1980: Pro-Shot Video

Forty years ago, Bob Marley embarked on a tour of Europe and the United States with The Wailers in support of their Uprising album. The 38-show excursion would be the last for the reggae icon, who succumbed to cancer on May 11, 1981. Marley & The Wailers brought the run to Dortmund, Germany on June 13, 1980 and the concert was filmed for the German live music television program Rockpalast. This week’s Full Show Friday features the resulting footage as part of JamBase’s celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month.

The concert began with a short set from The I Threes — vocalists Judy Mowatt, Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths — who were backed by The Wailers. Bob took the stage around the 19-minute mark to a vamp in which keyboardist Tyrone Downie chanted “Marley!” The then 35-year-old vocalist led The Wailers through “Natural Mystic” from Exodus, the first of 19 songs performed by Bob and the band that night.

Bob Marley & The Wailers’ career-spanning show continued with a run of “Positive Vibration,” “Revolution,” “I Shot The Sheriff,” “War,” “No More Trouble” and “Zimbabwe.” Next up was the sequence of “Jamming” and “No Woman No Cry.” While the concert came just three days after the release of Uprising, Marley only performed five songs from what turned out to be his final album. “Zion Train” was the first of those five songs and was followed by “Exodus” to close the main set.

The legendary reggae band had two encores in store for the German crowd. Uprising track “Redemption Song” opened the initial encore and led into the album’s “Could You Be Loved” and “Work.” Marley and company then played “Natty Dread” before pairing “Is This Love” and “Get Up, Stand Up.” Uprising’s “Coming In From The Cold” was the penultimate song of the evening ahead of the “Lively Up Yourself” finale.
