On April 28, 1994, Phish and Blues Traveler both performed at Sunfest in West Palm Beach, Florida. Traveler brought out Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio to sit in on “Mulling It Over,” and a high-quality video of the collaboration recently surfaced on YouTube.

Blues Traveler’s history with Anastasio dates back to their roots in Princeton, New Jersey. Traveler frontman John Popper was a frequent guest of Phish from 1989 through 1996, while Trey returned the favor several times between 1990 and 1994. Additionally, both bands took part in the inaugural H.O.R.D.E. Tour in 1992.

Phish performed first on April 28, 1994 at the 13th annual Sunfest before Blues Traveler headlined the North Stage. Anastasio stuck around and emerged early in Traveler’s set for “Mulling It Over.”

“Mulling It Over” is among Blues Traveler’s earliest originals and was recorded by the band for their 1990 self-titled debut studio album. Trey had ample chance to shine on the song at Sunfest 1994. Anastasio ripped along with Traveler guitarist Chan Kinchla and Popper in the pre-chorus breakdown. The two guitarists then traded licks and solos during the jam.

John Popper kept the jam going with a sizzling harmonica solo as his bandmates and Anastasio vamped underneath. Trey picked up on a riff Popper laid down and the pair then engaged in a call-and-response segment to bring “Mulling It Over” to a mighty peak. At the song’s end, John Popper exclaimed: “Those Phish guys? Love that band!” Thirty years later, the guest spot still stands as the most recent time Anastasio shared the stage with Blues Traveler.

The footage posted on Christmas by YouTuber AJ Genovesi was shot by multiple cameras and paired with soundboard audio. Watch Trey Anastasio and Blues Traveler performing “Mulling It Over” on April 28, 1994 below:
