Blues Traveler John Popper joined Umphrey’s McGee at their joint tour stop Friday night that was part of the Blue Note Summer Sessions at The Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, California. Popper added harmonica to a bust out performance of The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” which UM had last played in 2021.
Friday’s “Miss You” collaboration was the second time Umphrey’s McGee and Popper played the song together having first teamed up at a show in 2014. The Stones’ classic has appeared in six Umphrey’s McGee setlists, with each complete version featuring a guest harmonica player. Popper’s Napa sit-in began with his accompanying UM on their instrumental “Glory.”

Prior to the guest spot, Umphrey’s McGee started their set with a 20-minute “Preamble” into “Mantis,” followed by “New Wings.” Popper’s emergence came next, followed by “Small Strides.” The band then opened up “Bridgeless,” transitioning through “The Triple Wide,” “Women Wine And Song” and “Fenced In,” before returning to “Bridgeless” to complete the song and the set.
