The Black Crowes closed out their 2022 North American Summer Tour on Monday with a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver. Last night’s show featured a handful of rarities including the band’s first performance of Lions gem “Lickin'” since 2010.
When The Black Crowes announced their return to Red Rocks back in April, they mentioned it would not be a Shake Your Money Maker show. As such, unlike nearly every Black Crowes show from the past two years, the concert didn’t start with a complete performance of the band’s 1990 debut studio album.
The evening began with the pairing of “No Speak No Slave” and “Sting Me” from 1992’s The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson then led the ensemble through “Twice As Hard,” which along with “Hard To Handle,” “She Talks To Angels” and “Jealous Again” were the only songs played last night off Shake Your Money Maker.
“Twice As Hard” gave way to a string of rarities that started with “Goodbye Daughters Of The Revolution.” The cut from 2008’s Warpaint had only been played five other times this summer. Next came the third “Under A Mountain” since 2013 and the 2022 debut of Amorica’s “Descending.” However, the biggest surprise of the night followed “Hard To Handle” as “Lickin'” saw action after nearly 12 years on the shelf. The rocker was last trotted out by The Black Crowes on November 10, 2010 according to Setlist.FM. Chris Robinson dedicated the song “to all the lovers here tonight.”
Watch footage of last night’s “Lickin'” captured by a very excited fan:
The Black Crowes pulled “Horsehead” off 1999’s By Your Side after the bust out. From there, the band loaded the backend of the set with staples “She Talks To Angels,” “Thorn In My Pride,” “Wiser Time,” “Jealous Again” and “Remedy.” Additionally, the group played two covers recorded for their 1972 EP with “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” appearing late in the main set and The Rolling Stones’ “Rocks Off” serving as the encore. It’s now off to the UK and Europe for The Crowes.
