Billy Strings Concludes March 2021 Run At St. Augustine Amphitheatre

Billy Strings and his band returned to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Florida on Sunday to end a three-night stand at the venue. Strings, bassist Royal Masat, mandolinist Jarrod Walker and banjoist Billy Failing worked J.J. Cale’s “Ride Me High” into song sandwiches within both sets at the St. Augustine finale.

The quartet continued a trend by opening with a song from Strings’ Grammy-winning Home LP. “Hollow Heart” kicked off last night’s show and was followed by “While I’m Waiting Here” from 2017’s Turmoil & Tinfoil. Strings and his mates then jammed “Pyramid Country” into “Ride Me High.” The seamless sequence saw the band move from “Ride Me High” back into “Pyramid Country” before seemingly finishing off “Ride Me High.”

A double dose of Home came next with “Love Like Me” and “Running.” The four-piece then split their second ever renditions of recently debuted originals “Show Me The Door” and “Fire Line” with a cover of Tony Rice’s “Tipper” to close out the set.

Billy and the band took The String Cheese Incident’s “Black Clouds” deep to begin last night’s second set. From there, the quartet offered a run of “Leaders,” “This Old World” and “Ice Bridges” — three originals premiered by the group at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York last month. Next up was a string of bluegrass classics in the form of Bill Monroe’s “A Good Woman’s Love,” Flatt & Scruggs’ “Doin’ My Time,” the traditional “Air Mail Special” and Doc Watson’s “She Makes My Love Come Rolling Down.”

Strings and company dug in on the beloved “Meet Me At The Creek” towards the end of Sunday’s final set. The quartet surprised fans by transitioning back into “Ride Me High.” Billy sang the second verse and chorus before the group jammed on “Ride Me High” for nearly 10 minutes. The band built to a huge peak they segued back into “Meet Me At The Creek” to end the frame. Strings, Masat, Walker and Failing capped the evening with a “Hold The Woodpile Down” encore.
