Watch Billy Joel Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Rare ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’ Cover

Billy Joel continued his long-running monthly residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Tuesday. The legendary pianist and singer-songwriter celebrated Valentine’s Day with a rare cover of Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” and more.

Joel filled the first half of his set with classics like “My Life” and “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” as well as some other tricks up his sleeve for the occasion including a snippet of jazz standard “My Funny Valentine” in “Everybody Loves You Now.” The pianist also teased a bit of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns And Money.” Billy recently campaigned to have Warren Zevon inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

“I just wanted to put in my two cents of supporting Warren Zevon to be included,” Joel recently told The Los Angeles Times. “If anyone deserves to be, he does. He was a real original, and I don’t know if that’s appreciated enough…He was a piano player, and we all tend to get lumped into this thing of ‘they’re not real rock guys’ — which I don’t think is fair.”

Joel is indeed a real rock guy and proved it by reeling off rare covers of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love,” the latter making its last appearance at a Billy Joel concert in 2018. According to SetlistFM stats, the pianist has played the psychedelic Cream classic just 11 times since debuting it in 1987.
