Yesterday was the first day of the inaugural Los Muertos Con Queso destination concert being held in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and guitarist Bob Weir debuted a group also featuring Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, American Babies guitarist Tom Hamilton and Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and played a special tribute to The Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks.

Bobby and Billy led the band through “Uncle John’s Band” to open the first set in Mexico. Other Grateful Dead staples played in the first half included “Here Comes Sunshine,” “West L.A. Fadeaway,” “Crazy Fingers” and “Jack Straw.”

“China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” opened set two, followed by “Tennessee Jed.” Billy then began a drums jam that led into the ensemble joining in for a rendition of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam.” The set also featured the collective offering a fitting cover of Rev Gary Davis’ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” which was a staple of early Dead setlists. Weir’s “Sugar Magnolia” closed out set two and a patriotic pairing of “Liberty” and “U.S. Blues” served as the encore.

Wednesday’s Los Muertos Con Queso action also included an appearance by The Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Today’s music lineup features The String Cheese Incident and another performance by Kreutzmann and Weir’s group.
