Beck Welcomes Britt Daniel & Jenny Lewis At Madison Square Garden

July has once again been a good month for concerts at Madison Square Garden for the second summer in a row. Over the last two weeks, The World’s Most Famous Arena presented shows from the likes of Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Billy Joel. Last night the New York City venue hosted Beck who was headlining the Mecca for the first time ever in his 25-year career. The singer-songwriter is touring in support of his latest studio effort Colors and welcomed a pair of special guests at The Garden.
Beck and his multi-piece backing band opened up the night with “Devil’s Haircut” from his 1996 release Odelay and would go on to deliver a selection of tunes from nine albums over the course of his 18-song main set. The 48-year-old dedicated a bulk of the evening to selections from Colors playing six tracks from the 2017 release along with serving up some of his most well-known material like “The New Pollution,” “Mixed Bizness,” “Loser” and “E-Pro.”
Midway through his set Beck brought out his first guest of the night as Spoon frontman Britt Daniel emerged to assist on a pair of songs. Daniel first lent his talents to a take on “Dear Life,” with the duo taking turns singing lead. The augmented ensemble then surprised the crowd as Beck and Daniel teamed up on a cover of Spoon’s “I Turn My Camera On” from the Austin-based act’s 2005 album Gimme Fiction. The guest spots didn’t stop there as the singer invited Jenny Lewis to the stage next to help out on a tune that had been sitting on the shelf for over 15 years. Lewis, who served as the night’s opening act, assisted on a version of “Girl Dreams” – an acoustic folkie track from One Foot in the Grave which was last played on April 24, 2003.
