Earlier this week the Lockn’ Festival revealed Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir would join The Avett Brothers on the final day of this year’s event. The two acts have previously shared the live stage together, and those collaborations as well as other times The Avetts have performed Grateful Dead songs are the focus of this edition of Sunday Cinema.
Bobby & The Avetts will perform at the latter’s Lockn’ debut on Sunday, August 27. A previous collaboration took place when Weir and RatDog opened for Scott, Seth & Co. on June 11, 2014 at Red Rocks outside Denver. Members of the headlining group joined RatDog on “Franklin’s Tower.” Weir emerged during The Avett Brothers’ set to augment Dead staples “Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” and “Uncle John’s Band” as well as “Little Sadie.” Watch the sit-in courtesy of DCRangerFan below:
A few days before the Red Rocks pairing Weir and The Avett Brothers met up on stage at Mountain Jam in Hunter, New York. Officially shared rehearsal footage prior to the June 6, 2014 collaboration, as well as the performance of the regularly played Dead cover “The Race Is On” was previously posted by Mountain Jam. View both those clips, as well as video of The Avett Brothers original “Go To Sleep” captured by sgibson818 below:
Last year The Avett Brothers participated in one of the shows that were part of the two-night Dear Jerry: Let’s Play 2 events in Washington D.C. and in Fairfax, Virginia. Esteemed guitarist Warren Haynes joined the band at Fairfax’s EagleBank Arena on October 15 for a song-for-song performance of the Jerry Garcia Band show held at The Stone in San Francisco, California on October 18, 1986. Earlier this month The Avett Brothers staged a three-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. At the same site of the song’s debut on February 19, 1971, the band’s May 13 appearance at The Cap featured a cover of “Deal” during the encore.
