Animal Collective Revisits ‘Feels’ At First Full Show In 4 Years

Animal Collective dug deep into their mid-2000s repertoire on Wednesday at Queens’ Knockdown Center, performing Feels in full alongside songs from the same era. The concert opened a four-show celebration of the 2005 album and marked the quartet’s first full live performance in four years.

Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin and Geologist reunited for the run following last year’s 20th anniversary reissue of Feels. In announcing the concerts, the band explained that revisiting the material involved tracking down old loops, tunings, pedals and a working MiniDisc player.

The performance followed the album’s running order, beginning with “Did You See The Words” and continuing through “Grass,” “Flesh Canoe” and “The Purple Bottle.” According to Setlist.fm, the opener was Animal Collective’s first rendition since 2013.

Longer absences ended during the album’s second half. “Daffy Duck” returned for the first time since 2006, while “Loch Raven” resurfaced after a decade. The band inserted “My Favorite Colors” between those two songs before completing Feels with “Turn Into Something,” their first documented performance of the album closer since 2005.

Animal Collective then continued exploring the period with “Must Be Treeman,” “Tikwid” and “Fickle Cycle.” Setlist.fm lists both “Must Be Treeman” and “Tikwid” as their first performances since 2005. All four selections beyond the original album’s nine tracks appeared on the expanded anniversary edition.

Animal Collective returns to Knockdown Center tonight, October 22. The brief run continues at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre on Saturday, October 24 and concludes at Fox Theater Pomona on Monday, October 26.
