AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young was born on this date in 1955. While the legendary rock band was formed in Sydney, Australia, Angus and his siblings — including his brother and AC/DC bandmate Malcolm Young — were born in Glasgow, Scotland and spent their early years growing up in the tough, working-class suburb of Cranhill.

While the Youngs immigrated to Australia in 1963 after a particularly rough winter in Scotland, Angus and Malcolm would co-found AC/DC in 1973 and return to Glasgow as rock stars along with fellow Scotch-Australian frontman Bon Scott, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams at the Apollo Theatre on April 30, 1978.

The concert was captured for posterity and most of the show would later be released as the 1978 live album If You Want Blood You’ve Got It, widely considered one of the greatest live albums of all time. It’s an apt accolade. Touring around their album Powerage — arriving in the UK two days before the Glasgow concert — AC/DC was at the height of their powers in 1978, incredibly tight and bursting with raucous rock ‘n’ roll energy.

“This gig summed up what made AC/DC so special live: the energy, the rapport with the crowd and the way those simple yet classic songs took on another life,” renowned Scottish DJ Tom Russell said of the show. “You hear all of this on If You Want Blood. It’s a great reminder of how remarkable the band and their fans were that night.”

The concert opened with Angus Young standing on an amp in his iconic school-boy uniform banging out the opening chords to Powerage’s “Riff Raff.” Angus then goes flying off his amp and what follows is full-tilt boogie, pure and unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll.

While the concert was filmed, it has never been released in its entirety although footage has appeared on various DVDs released in the 2000s. The YouTube channel AC/DCPortugal premiered a video in 2021 compiling four of the 10 tracks that appeared on If You Want Blood. The AC/DCPortugal video also boasts the original audio not heard on the live album along with three songs, “Bad Boy Boogie,” “Dog Eat Dog” and “Fling Thing,” also not on If You Want Blood.

Along with “Riff Raff, cuts appearing on the live album include “Rock ‘n’ Roll Damnation,” “Let There Be Rock,” and encore “Rocker,” which, along with “Fling Thing,” saw the band in Scottish football uniforms in honor of Bonny and The Youngs’ native country.
