Andrew Bird issued the single “Atomized” today via Loma Vista along with an accompanying video directed by Matthew Daniel Siskin. The track marks the multi-instrumentalist’s first new single and video of the year.
Bird and his band — consisting of bassist Alan Hampton, drummer Abe Rounds and guitarist-producer Mike Viola — recorded “Atomized” live. The song features Andrew plucking his violin, showing off his signature whistling skills and delivering its impactful vocals.
“Atomized” arrives as Andrew Bird prepares to embark on a co-headlining tour with Iron & Wine this summer. The trek marks Bird’s first full-band tour since 2019.

The late Joan Didion wrote that she “had dealt directly and flatly with the evidence of atomization, the proof that things fall apart” in 1967. Andrew was inspired by Didion’s words to pen his new single. “Didion was updating W.B. Yeats for the fractious 60s,” Bird explained in a statement. “This song takes it to the pixelated present where it’s not just society that is getting atomized but the self that is being broken apart and scattered.”
