‘American Dad’ Airs Phish-Themed Episode
Monday’s episode of animated television series American Dad, “Shakedown Steve,” featured a storyline devoted to Phish. Two of the show’s main characters spent time “on lot,” where they encountered wookies, custies, the Nitrous Mafia, stray dog “Runaway Jim” and famed Phish/Grateful Dead fan Bill Walton.
The plot centered around teenager Steve wanting to form a true brotherly relationship with Jeff, his brother-in-law. Jeff, aka “Cheese,” brings Steve to a Phish show and explains the ways of the lot, including selling grilled cheese sandwiches to make enough money to score tickets for the concert.
Steve, who earns the nickname “Little Cheese,” forms a bond with Jeff. The pair go on tour but Steve gets himself in trouble after he makes a deal he can’t keep with the Nitrous Mafia for bread and cheese in order to attend a Phish festival.
The episode was written by longtime Phish fan and American Dad staffer Tim Saccardo. “As some of you already know, I write for the animated TV comedy American Dad and somehow tricked my co-workers into letting me write an episode about the Shakedown scene in the lots on Phish tour,” Saccardo explained in a note posted on Reddit. “Even though none of the other writers or animators really knew what I was talking about most of the time, they were great sports and we managed to pack a ton of fun Phishy stuff into 22 minutes of animated silliness. Hope you all enjoy it!”
