Amanda Shires will release a new album entitled Take It Like A Man via ATO Records on July 29. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist today unveiled the LP’s lead single, “Hawk For The Dove,” along with a video for the track directed and edited by Shires and Deren Ney.
Produced by Lawrence Rothman, Take It Like A Man features 10 tracks written and recorded during lockdown. Amanda’s husband, Jason Isbell contributes guitar to a number of songs including “Hawk For The Dove.” The follow-up to Shires’ 2021 holiday album For Christmas also contains guest vocals from Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Brittney Spencer.
“I was just mesmerized. I thought she was the new Dolly Parton; Dolly for a new generation,” Rothman said after listening to Shires for the first time. Amanda put together a series of emotionally honest tunes capturing a tough period in her life as a woman, a wife and a mother. “Shires hit the reset button and made a record so unlike anything she’s ever recorded that it feels like her debut album instead of her seventh,” as per press materials announcing the LP.
“Hawk For The Dove” was recorded at the famed RCA Studio B in Nashville. The track features Rothman on keys, Isbell on guitar and backing vocals from Spencer. “This is the song where Jason finally had enough of the buzz in the studio and switched to a Gretsch,” noted Shires. “That was the moment he realized why Chet Atkins loved Gretsch guitars.”
