The all-star George Harrison tribute tour All You Need Is George began last night with a concert at Sony Hall in New York City. A supergroup consisting of guitarists Steve Kimock and Jackie Greene, bassist Berry Duane Oakley, drummer Pete Lavezzoli and keyboardist Gil Assayas fit songs from Harrison’s solo catalog and the repertoires of the Beatles, Traveling Wilburys and Cream into the setlist.
Greene, Oakley, Lavezzoli and Assayas shared vocal duties over the course of the evening. The All You Need Is George Tour started with performances of six songs off Harrison’s iconic 1970 solo album, All Things Must Pass: “Wah-Wah,” “Awaiting On You All,” “If Not For You,” “Art Of Dying,” “Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)” and “Beware Of Darkness.”
A cover of the Beatles’ “Within You Without You” came next before the quintet returned to All Things Must Pass for “My Sweet Lord,” “Isn’t It A Pity,” “What Is Life” and “All Things Must Pass.” All You Need Is George tackled “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” to end the opening stanza.
The second set was heavy on the Beatles classics. “Taxman” kicked off the frame ahead of “Norwegian Wood,” “If I Needed Someone,” “I Want To Tell You,” “Here Comes The Sun,” and “Something.” Kimock, Greene, Oakley, Lavezzoli and Assayas looked to Harrison’s 1980’s output for the ensuing “Got My Mind Set On You.” Next up was a cover of George’s final single, “Any Road,” which was released on his posthumous album Brainwashed.
Opening night rolled on with a well-jammed version of “Badge,” a Cream song George Harrison wrote with pal Eric Clapton. The Ringo Starr solo hit “It Don’t Come Easy” wrapped the second set. Harrison helped write and produced the 1971 hit, which the Beatles bandmates performed together at George’s Concert for Bangladesh shows.
The five-piece lit into the Traveling Wilburys’ beloved “Handle With Care” to get the encore underway. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was tacked on for good measure.
