Trey Anastasio Debuts Petrichor In Portland

By Scott Bernstein Sep 10, 2014 6:30 am PDT

Last night Trey Anastasio of Phish kicked off a three-city orchestral tour at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, OR. Anastasio was backed by the Oregon Symphony for two sets and an encore filled mostly with orchestral versions of Phish classics. There was one notable exception, as Trey and the Oregon Symphony debuted Anastasio’s expansive “Petrichor” piece during the closing stanza.

“Petrichor,” which is named for the scent the ground gives off after the season’s first rain, is said to celebrate the process of rebirth and transformation that a storm sets in motion. Anastasio started writing the piece in 2012 while he attended rehearsals for the Hands On A Hardbody and enlisted long-time collaborator Don Hart to orchestrate the composition. The majestic “Petrichor” contains a number of different, beautiful sections that flow nicely into each other and at the conclusion was met by a rapturous standing ovation from the audience.
