Last weekend Umphrey’s McGee opened for Widespread Panic on Friday and Saturday nights at the Family Circle Stadium in Charleston, SC. Both acts invited members of the other band to sit in on Saturday night, leading to wonderful performances of “Ain’t No Sunshine” by UM with John Bell and a double dose of Funkadelic covers from Widespread Panic with members of Umphrey’s McGee.

Umphrey’s guitarist Jake Cinninger and keyboardist Joel Cummins emerged in the middle of Widespread Panic’s second set for covers of “Maggot Brain” and “Red Hot Mama,” which also saw contributions from percussionist Andy Farag. Cinninger and Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring dueled during “Maggot Brain” making for an impressive version of the tune, while “Red Hot Mama” contained a fantastic call-and-response segment from Cummins and JoJo Hermann.
