Several songs recorded for the original Amazon children’s show Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street have been shared by the online retailer. The newly available four-song set features The Avett Brothers, Andrew Bird, Sharon Van Etten and Conor Oberst performing covers of well-known tracks.
The EP features The Avetts taking on the Louis Armstrong standard “What A Wonderful World,” Bird giving “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King a string-heavy arrangement, Van Etten interpreting The Flaming Lips’ favorite “Do You Realize?” and Oberst’s version of Bill Withers’ sing-along “Lean On Me.” Here’s what Van Etten said regarding her contribution to the program:
When I was asked to cover a Flaming Lips song for Gortimer Gibbons, I was really nervous. But when I watched the scene and heard from the people involved in the music, they really wanted to hear my interpretation of both the scene and the song. The show is sweet and smart and family oriented—and that is really important to me. So glad I was able to be a part.
