i used to like their music, when i was a kid in high school (around 1990) and depressed at times. their music makes me want to cry until i fall asleep. i'm so glad that i found jerry garcia. even homer simpson thought their music was depressing, when he was on the Lollapallalla? (whatever they changed it to) tour taking cannonballs in the gut.

Why is this album "highly anticipated"? Billy Corgan has been releasing a string of duds ever since the original Smashing Pumpkins broke up, a couple of which even included Jimmy Chamberlin. So, without the other two original members, this is really just another Corgan solo project using the SP name in hopes of fooling the record buying public into buying another dud.

i'm with mskaist on this one. i can't believe they're calling themselves the Smashing Pumpkins. i was in high school in the late 90's so of course they're were a big part of my teen years, but i personally never did like them that much, it was forced feed to me by my peers in a feeble attempt to convert for my hippie ways. i was a dead and panic fan back then too and didn't care too much for the depressing slit my wrists grunge rock back then ethier.

people who think the smashing pumpkins are lame, or bad musicians don't know shit about them. bottom line they are great musicians and they made amazing albums.

not to mention jimmy and billy were really the writing force behind 95% of every single note you heard on any of their albums, so its very fair that they still call it the smashing pumpkins.

Pumpkins' first two albums, especially "Gish", really hold up. Last three albums - eh; Zwan-three good songs. But still, Billy + Jimmy= excitement! Let's hope Billy has decided to rock again, though. Please. No synths allowed.

i like the pumpkins but yeah i dont see hope for this album. Out of all the grunge shit that came out in the early 90s these guys were the most original. I havent really been intrested in anything since meloncolly. So chances are im probably not going to look into it... Im too busy listening to jam bands, funk, jazz, blues and bluegrass... no time for you billy... sorry. Why dont you stop singing and start a funk band.

Some of you might not know this, but if you are listening to Siamese Dream (which in my opinion is easily their best album) you are listening to two musicians - Billy % Jimmy. Billy plays every guitar part on that album, and amazingly so. And Jimmy is one of THE best rock drummers of the last 20 years. Before Pumpkins he was trained as a jazz drummer, so he brings a lot to the table. To me, he's the closest thing to Keith Moon since, well, Keith Moon.

I do have to agree with fhg645 on this though, I do hoppe they lay low on the synths. Zwan did a pretty good job of keeping it rocking. In fact, I felt that was the best "Pumpkins" album since Siamese.

Anyways, I don't think the absence of James or D'Arcy will hurt the album at all. James was competent enough, but in concert, D'Arcy couldn't play worth a shit. If they bring in a bad-ass bass player, this could be an amazing album.

Nonetheless, I'd give back all the Pumpkins, Police, and Rage reunions for just one more Phish show. Word.

Launch Radio Networks reported last week that it's looking more and more likely that the new SMASHING PUMPKINS lineup will not include original members James Iha on guitar and D'Arcy Wretzky on bass. PUMPKINS manager Paul Geary hinted at a different formation in comments he made to, saying, "I've been involved with bands whose members can't stand each other, and over time they run out of dough and that's why they (reunite). But Billy's (Corgan, PUMPKINS leader) making a great record, and for the sake of a younger generation that he wants to turn on to the band's music, he is doing it with a band that will more faithfully re-create the old songs than ever before."

Geary did not say anything further about the new PUMPKINS lineup. The only confirmed original member besides Corgan is drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.

Corgan often expressed irritation in the past with Iha and Wretzky's playing, and it was rumored that he recorded all of their parts himself on much of the PUMPKINS' recorded output.

Geary, who also manages GODSMACK and was formerly the drummer for '80s rockers EXTREME, added that the PUMPKINS are not being reactivated for the money. He said, "They've had some amazingly big offers — some seven-figure ones to play certain shows — and Billy has passed on several because he didn't think it was the right thing for the band."

The PUMPKINS will play their first live dates since 2000 in early June at two German festivals.

Jun. 02 - Rock Am Ring - Nürburgring, GER
Jun. 03 - Rock Im Park - Nürnberg, GER
Jun. 15 - Nova Rock - Nickelsdorf, AUT
Jun. 17 - Greenfield - Interlaken, SWI

More tour dates are expected to be announced shortly.

MrElbert...I agree 100%...including the last comment about the reunion we really want to see.

It must be understood that Billy is a control freak and successfully controled every aspect of the Pumpkins as a band up until their eventual breakup. That included playing D'Arcy's basslines and Iha's guitar parts in the studio. The only thing he didn't do by himself was play drums...thus the use of Jimmy Chamberlain who is incredible in his own right (I like to compare him to Mitch Mitchell of the Hendrix Experience rather than Moon, because Jimmy is seemingly the only one who can complement the force that is Billy Corgan...a relationship which bears a strong resemblance to that of Hendrix and Mitchell (obviously, I'm not a Buddy Miles fan)). Anyway, if you think that D'Arcy and Iha were that important to the Pumpkins, check out some of their solo work...or look at the handful of songs that Iha wrote for the Pumpkins over the years. Having seen the original Pumpkins live a number of times, it's pretty clear that Billy and Jimmy were the driving forces behing the group.

yeah, bigrivemusic...billy and jimmy were the masterminds behind the music. the only reason jimmy was all that influential is because he is an incredible drummer and could do things billy couldn't. its pretty well documented and noted. so my ass isn't showing, whatever that means. plus zwan had major potential. their album had some real highlights and most of their best music was songs they played live and never made the album.

james wrote some of his own music in the pumpkins, but little of it made any albums, and you know he wrote it cuz he is singing.

ps...people are way too big of assholes on this site.

Man what a shame....
It always seems as though, if a band doesn't "JAM" or have an "IMPROVIZED" section in their music the band gets put down hard on this site. There’s more to music that just “JAMMING” and don’t get me wrong I’m a huge fan of that style. Oh and by the way if you want some sick improve you hippies should have been to the Pumpkins show in Hartford back in 96", third encore 45 min. long, completely improve with James Iha using a laser tag gun on his strings. Both Billy and James are two of the most underrated guitarists out there, course if you listened to a wider variety of music than just “Jam Bands” one would realize this...!!!!! The Smashing Pumpkins are a talented band with a huge range in sound. They can be heavy, ambient, and or even “JAM” in concert. Everyone has there opinion, to each his own, but people who put bands down should do their research before posting ignorant comments. Thank God for the Pumpkins, they’ve inspired many.....!!!

Without James or D'arcy it isn't the pumpkins? WHAT? LOL. I am a huge pumpkins fan, and everyone with that opinion that without those two it's not the pumpkins is NUTS. Billy and Jimmy are and will always be the driving force of SP. D'arcy had 75% of her stuff written for her by Billy. Was she hot? Sure, but she aint Victor wooten people. Auf De Maur is probably a more sound techincal bassist than D'arcy could ever be.Not saying I want her back, but it's truth. It is sad to see that James won't be with them, but come on people, James ain't a guitar god. Was he cool? Sure. Did he fit the band? Sure. But BC and JC are the Smashing pumpkins. Zwan was far from weak, I saw them a few times and it felt like a ROCK show. We also forget that during an age of cookie cutter Nirvana/Pearl jam rip offs SP managed to be the DIFFERENT band, that could Rock and blow your speakers out, the sound that Billy can get out of a recording is incredible, the sound can fill all the spaces in a room. They are one of the most underated bands of all time. In a time where cobain was worshiped Billy was doing his thing better than most.BTW, I don't think he needs the money people, I guarentee he is more than well off. He does it for the love of music, some of you elitists might not get that.

They can rock with the best, and pull out acoustics and still be an amazing band. I was dissapointed with Billys solo album but that Zwan album was awesome. In a time where all "rock" radio music sucks we should hail the return of SP. Besides this community of music, the rest of "Rock" music is shit, and these 3 chord teeny bopper heros need a taste of what real music is.

musicfan01. The jamband scene is in rapid decline, especially since Phish has disbanded. I have attended over 50 Dead shows and tons of shows by Phish, Panic, Moe., and so on. There is nothing out there that hasn't already been done. I love music. It doesn't matter if it's improvised or not. I am just saying that the "jamband" scene is not what it us to be. Smashing Pumpkins just don't do it for me. By the way, it isn't an ignorant comment. It's just an opinion.

So sick of this "what is this band doing on jambase" conversation. I was in to SP before i was into "jambands" and still consider them one of the most influential bands of their time. And who cares if the jambands scene isn't what it used to be. Shit changes, bands change - i would much rather be in today's music scene with umphs, sts9, biscuits, moe, galactic etc... touring the shit out of the country playing beautiful venues rather than seeing phish play the same amphitheaters year after year with the same custy crowd.

Billy Corgan was one of my most influential musicians of the 90's. Sure, he's probably demented, but I consider Gish to be one of the best debut albums, and Siamese Dream is a masterpiece. Then they defied all logic and odds by releasing a double album with "Melancholy" Jimmy's awesome on the skins. As for the other two, Billy taught them how to play their instruments. The Smashing Pumpkins is pretty much the Billy Corgan show anyway...

Umphs, sts9 biscuits, moe, galactic. It's all the same. That's all that is left of this "scene". This is what the "custy crowd" has resorted to. It's been done before. I've seen all those bands way back when they were playing my local bar. They just don't stand out to me. And by the way, there is nothing wrong with SP, I just think of them, I think of the "grunge" early to mid nineties rage. Not about the struggling "jamband" scene.

just out of curiosity - who is sts9 playing out? i have seen all those bands in my local bars years ago, and i can say that they all have developed their unique sound. My point is that i am more excited about music now, then i have been in the last 10 years. And any reminiscence of my early taste in music such as the Pumpkins reuniting (well half anyway), is a blessing not a curse.

Oh yeah, I just remebered being at DeerCreek 98 when the boys opened 2nd night with a a Pumpkins song of Gish. Amazing.

So see, Pumpkins do have a place in the "jamband" community. Quit trying to label music. There are only two categories - Good and Bad. And they are both subjective.

Execpt Whitesnake. I think we can all agree what category they fall in. :)

Hello Improv? "Starla" anyone?

Yes. I wish this band took more chances on stage with improv but we can only wish for most of the time they give what "their" crowd expects and wants. Same with TOOL. Imagine that band in a type II jam live. Have a listen to Stella for it's one of my fav's of SP.

The jamband scene is not struggling, it's diverse and many things to many people. We're currently without our "GD" or "Phish" but there's so much music in this community that it equals those two bands and more. Put your shoes on, turn the key, and go see some live music.

I feel that those bands are just doing what was done years ago, that's all. I personally think that SP suck. All I was saying was that I was surprised that it was commented on this site.
