UMPHREY’S McGEE IN A NUTSHELL
If one were seeking a clear encapsulation of the ambition, talent and artistry at work in Umphrey's McGee today they’d be hard pressed to do better than this clip, captured at the band’s New Year’s Eve concert in St. Louis, MO last Saturday night. The range of dynamics and emotional depth of this piece is pretty bloody impressive, and the entire experience is amplified with the empathetic, hugely varied light design by the justifiably buzzed about Jefferson Waful, whose contributions are increasingly a seventh member in the overall Umphrey’s McGee experience, a presence as profound – particularly in the humming crucible of a concert hall – as anyone onstage. What impresses further still is how at 22-minutes this selection never loses steam or falters into self-indulgence. The group-think at work in UM is palpable and frankly dazzling when it would be so easy for each hotshot player to showboat or spotlight hog. The sense of a shared vision is evident, beautifully condensed in this one moment from a momentous night. (Dennis Cook)
