More Hints That Phish May Be Coming Back

Trey at Jammys
By R. Snyder
Last week we filled you in on Trey Anastasio talking to Rolling Stone about his longing for the days of Phish. Specifically, Trey said:

When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I'm not gonna go around playing 'You Enjoy Myself' for the rest of my life. And it's so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it's not that I can't believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.

Today we're here to report on Phish lyricist Tom Marshall speaking to Pop Matters in an article published yesterday (June 4) about the same issue. "Trey wants Phish to come back" Marshall said. Marshall explains that he's been writing and recording with Trey at his Rubber Jungle studios in Saratoga Springs, New York "for the past four months." Marshall went on to say: "I think if the stars align and everything works out there will be [a reunion]. I don't think they will ever be a huge touring band."

When asked about the songs he and Trey have been crafting, Marshall said: "They could take a left turn into the Trey Anastasio Band or a straight turn to Phish." With Trey set to perform at a few summer festivals including Rothbury, Newport Folk Fest and All Points West, fans are, well, foaming at the mouth with hopes of a Phish reunion. Marshall ends the talk by telling us, "No one wants Phish back more than Trey."

As you contemplate the possibilities, take a trip back to 1997's Great Went in Limestone, ME and dig into a lil' "Harry Hood,"... and yes, perhaps the time is approaching where you can once again feel good...

I am rested and ready.

Rothbury would be a nice place to start.

Thanks Trey for clearing your mind. Now let's get the party started.

Here's to several months of practice before any reunions. I really hope there's no half-assed "reunion" at any festis, and the boys decide to take six months to get back to the level we all know they can attain. That being said...I really hope YEM opens the first show back.

I agree wiht you Jackstraw. I really hope they don't play their first show back (if it happens at all) at a festival. It would be great if they plan the show a few months out and have it be at some awsome location. How about New Years Eve at Madison Square Garden? Just like their come back from hiatus. This is assuming "the star align." I'm channeling the universe right now. Please Phish, COME BACK!!!

"I don't think they will ever be a huge touring band."- What the FUCK DOES THIS MEAN? Less dates, more three-day runs?, I don't get that comment... Does that mean we'll never see them at Creek anymore, or Gorge, or even Meriweather? Either way I think If Trey Feels like he is ready then it's time. I just don't want things to get rushed, because the Music would def. suffer. Either way, Three day festival in CA.....!

Was there ever a question that Phish wouldn't be back? Phish seems to go on hiatus just for publicity, hype, and to play fewer shows where tickets are sold for hundreds of dollars (if not more) by rotten ticket agencies and scalpers. Within a month of Phish breaking up the last time, Trey was baiting the hook saying that he couldn't see them staying away forever. (This was on jambase I believe)I never saw this breakup as the end just an advertisement. I've listened to Phish most of my life thanks to friends older siblings and when Jer passed they seemed like a pulsing artery of life. I stopped around 1999-2000 when the politics and publicity begin to seriously overshadow the music. Not meaning to dump on Phish they are phenom. musicians and put on tight curiously enigmatic shows. But hey, lets forget the hype they're just human. Trey Quit. Jerry had to die. When your part of something obviously bigger than any one person, can you ever stop? And what will be the price of admission? We used to play for silver now we play for life.

This might be selfish to say but I would want them to be a full on tour band again, a reunion tour would be nostalgic though. I hope they revert back to the old way of Mail Order tickets where as long as the envelope was postmarked on a certain date you were pretty much guaranteed tix...where you sat was the Tickler. And honestly, the 4 of them together are better than any of these side project attempts. I just want to hear a freakin' live Bowie followed by a Punch.

Come On people, "Will" them to get back and DO this.

Phish has accomplished so much that they will play on their own accord. They brought out triple the amount of people to all of their festivals alone then a Rothbury or 10KLF will ever bring out. I hear Trey is in the studio working on Phish music, and expects summer 2009 according to Trey's wife. I have to stand up to write this I am so damn excited.

So psyched on hearing all of this finally! Don't take my word for it, I don't think they'll be back together this year. But next year for sure! 2 years ago '06, I had heard of a rumor that I have been staying positive for ever since. That is that Phish plans to do a surprise reunion at MSG on New Year's Eve of 2008. I don't remember why, there was some reason for it actually, but that is what I heard. Take it or leave it. I know I'm ready to give my left nut for YEM.

"Set the gear-shift to the high gear of your soul! You've got to run like an antelope, out of control!" ....cause that is what I will do to see Phish

I remember hearing Keller Williams play Anetlope > Runaway Jim > Antelope about a year after Phish broke up, at moe.down. While not being the biggest Keller fan in the universe, that not me dancing with a huge grin on my face. It wasn't even close to a Phish experience, yet I still felt the effect of this band and their music.

Everyone should get down on their knees and pray to whatever gods/dogs that they please. We need an over-due, well-practiced, Phish-reunion.

I just hope they take time, a new album would be sweet. They don't need to tour for me really. Just four seasonal festivals, or like a month of touring and a big blow out at the end. Be the beatles I don't care, put music out and play every once and a while. The less pressure the better for them.

I've got a good feeling that when they DO come back, musically it will be Fire. The boys have had time to do their own thing and reflect on the Monster that Phish turned into and CLEAN-UP...hopefully Trey won't F it up like he did last time. Let's face it, listen to all of those Post Hiatus shows....who Efed up the most? Trey butchered simple sections and lyrics!! I really think he has seen the light and will be AMPED and En FUEGO.

If you don't want Frat Boys then I suggest not requesting the Wide Spread Merger. It's like a popped collar croakie fest at one of their shows. Still don't get the appeal of that band but....to each their own.

I have to agree with gotti3, I am not sure the experience could be anything like the early to mid 90's. Those were the days before hip hop was all you heard in the lot. Maybe I am getting old but you have to imagine all the kids that talk shit on this site will be there and all the agro young douche bags will be there, so do I let the memories of the most amazing times remain in my music collection or risk the new definitely different phish experience. either way this is very exciting.

If Phish is to return to that mid 90s level (how about fall '97? anyone?), I believe it will absolutely have to be a different experience, a new incarnation of Phish to bring fresh excitement and renewed energy. You can never fully bring back past epic moments come and gone. We know this, Phish knows this. For a Phish return to work (beyond a cheesey reunion spectacular) it has to be a new vibe. It cannot be forced and has be an organic evolution stemming from the past experience. In that light it is very exciting that Trey/Tom have been writing new material potentially for Phish. To me that is the signal that a comeback may be real.

We are all still hearing Spring '09. I hope is not a NYE thing, it equals too many people and not enough fans, Id like them to start out West, where fans can get cheap tix and security is light. Dallas/ Vegas/ Shoreline / Gorge/ Utah/ Kansas/. The drives suck but at least you get in, and then they are ready to shred by the time they hit mid america and the NE. As far as the band, they played some GREAT SHOWS post hiatus, a little hit and miss, but check out the second night Hampton (my first show post hiatus)or the first night Vegas 03 another hot show, or Albany before the 20th reunion, this band has always had good nights and bad nights even at their highest points so far.

But I agree, I don't know if it will ever be what it was. I'd go for certain, but the early 90's with the Giant Country Horns were the best days.

i've seen 33 shows and the only one that was post hiatus was greensboro 3/2003. it was an o.k. show, definately not in the top. i think trey changed between 2000 and 2003 and the drugs were taking a toll. now that he's sober, i am hoping he's got his shit together. i always loved hampton, was there both nights 97, 98, & 99. plattsburgh 96 was great and so was big cypress. i always had a great time at star lake and darien lake, as well as vernon downs. new orleans 99 was strange, as well as raleigh and atlanta always cool too. i'm looking forward to a full summer tour followed by a kick down fall, 2009, with a few surprises in the mean time. i always loved Tela, jewel of wilson's proud domain. ....same shit ruined the Dead...no more camping, getting banned at various venues...tour head vs touch head....yadyada...good bands get too big for their original fan base (now Wilco, MMJ?) and people start claiming them, ruin scenes, etc. Bands evolve, make a left turn, go into rehab, change the tour schedule, die, or....keep putting out crap and the scene goes away by itself...Hope PHish practices before they go on tour so they don't suffer the latter.

I can't help but imagine that if/when this does really happen, it will happen one of two ways:

1. They will play an unannounced set in the parking lot of some festival that will instantly go down as the most legendary Phish gig ever.

2. MSG, Fenway, or Boston Garden.

I think phish will wait until early '09. Their first show will be at Nectar's in Burlington billed under a different name and they will play all new or odd ball songs. After that probably a few more gigs under a pseudonym in the NE leading to a summer tour, building to a Big Cypress 10th anniversary new years.

Of course from my own personal bias I'd love to see them start off with a 20th anniversary tour celebrating Coloroado '88, but it ain't gonna happen like that

claypoolsclam - r u 4 real??? they don't have to do anything for publicity , phish can sellout any venue in the country no questions asked.

when they do come back it will not be as heavy of a schedule as they used to do but i am sure they will get around pretty good - without any opening band to get in the way....

as far as the "scene" it for sure will be madness....maybe they could do a 30 and over tour to keep all those pesky kids out of the lot.....hehehe

1st comeback show - merriweather , opening song - wilson ;-)

I love phish and would like to see them again. However, I think its a little embarrassing for them since they made such a big thing out of quitting. I mean they gave the trampolines to the crowd and specifically talked about the choice for their last song to ever play. Still, even after giving such a big goodbye, I'd also like to see them back. That shitshow at coventry was easily the worst music i've ever heard them play and a bad one to end on. If Trey decides to do it, I hope its the right way and they put on an incredible show every night like they were in the 90s.

Can't wait!!!! I am predicting this fall!!!! I will agree that fluffhead would be a perfect opener, but it will be fun either way. When it comes to the fans I bet it is an older crowd. Most of the youngsters have been turned off by Trey solo and that will be for the best. But I enjoy hanging out with younger people and why shouldn't they enjoy the scene too. When I was a youngster at dead shows I was all spun out and acted stupid but it was the perfect place for it. EXPERIMENTATION!! It is what is going down both by the band and the fans. That is what keeps it real. By the I was a frat boy at my first show 4/1/91 liberty hall, lawrence ks. You can judge all you want. Just remember it isn't the tie-die on the outside that matters. It's the tie-die on the inside.

Wow everyone seems to be glossing over Tom's quote "I think if the stars align and everything works out there will be [a reunion]. I don't think they will ever be a huge touring band."

To me that means a reunion, as in a one off Rothbury kind of thing. I would bet that Trey's family would not be very supportive if he came home one day and said "Honey, kids, parents, I decided I kicked the habit, and we booked a bunch of 3 night runs this fall."

pgeano- Weak arguments. First of all I hope you're not comparing Celine Dion with PHISH?!? And Micheal Jordan was an athlete not a musician, you can't keep dunking in the NBA at 57, but you can still play you're guitar. (just saw Eric Clapton shred a couple month ago). Jerry played with the Dead longer than Trey did for Phish, and unlike Jerry, Trey is sober ( for now ). Bonnaroo sells out and look what happens, Rothbury, 10klf, SummerCamp, AllGood. All these Festies are great and are all because Bonnaroo's direction changed. But Phish will always be Phish, and soo many people don't even like, or even heard of Phish. Especially young kids. Most kids listen to them because of older brothers and sisters. If you Love Phish, new/ or old timers, wook or not, we can all agree we love the Music.

I dont fully understand that sentence either, that's like the grateful dead resurrecting, and declaring they don't think they will be a tour band. It's like trey said "It always felt like we were part of something that was so much bigger than the four of us.. and it felt like almost a cultural timing thing." Which couldn't be more correct, phish is much more than just a band..hell you could call it a religion if you want (fyi, the whole band CAN walk on water). I've been listening to phish for probably 3 years, and its just gotten progressively worse and cannot quit. I never got the chance to see them, and it just seems like a fantasy to be able to, but things are lookin up!!

"I don't think they will ever be a HUGE touring band." - Tom Marshall.

I'm sure they will tour, but just not Spring, summer, festival, fall, NYE, winter every single year. That would be greedy of us as fans to expect that or even to ask for that. Probably more along the lines of a Phil and Friends type schedule... NYE, a moderate Summer OR Fall tour, throw in a festival here and there. (And in festival I mean a Phish festival...not playing bonaroo.)

A new chapter may be about to begin. I for one will be there enjoying whatever the band chooses to play and not spoiling my good time trying to compare today to yesterday.

Also, It's not one of my very favorite Phish songs but I think that Down With Disease would be a great reunion opener:

"Waiting for the time when I can finally say

That this has all been wonderful but now I'm on my way

When I think It's time to leave it all behind

Phattie, what do you not get? Trey's addiction (2 stints in the clink, years of probation and mandatory, court ordered rehab) is going to limit their ability and desire to go on a massive tour. The cultural timing thing says it all, this is not 1997 anymore, the internet has exploded, the jam band scene has exploded, and the band is closer to 50 years old than 25. We will not get a 40 night tour again anytime soon.

moonnugs, I agree with you in that it doesn't make sense to not wish for a reunion, thats not what I am saying, and believe me if there is an announced show of any kind, I will do my damndest to be there. But I think we all need to take this story for what it is, hearsay from Trey through Tom, with no specfics about anything other than "if the stars align". SCIFreak, you're right, comparing Phish to Celine Dion or anybody, for that matter, is... just wrong. And if Phish reunites and comes to my town, I'll be there (Mike's side, row 12). Still, I think my recordings from '96-'98 will be better than anything Phish could possibly churn out on stage in this decade or the next. And I'm just so happy with almost all of the great acts that are touring right now, and all the great festivals that have risen from the ashes. I just don't want anything to change it.

I've got one more question to ask everybody, just to drive my unpopular opinion home: Can you think of anyone, in any field, that has returned from "retirement," and the fans were happy with the quality work they did when they came back?

People talk so much trash about Coventry, and about this band coming back. I was there, I walked 15 miles to get in, parked my jeep on some farmers lawn for 50$ and hope it would be there when I got back. It was about the experience. Phish shows were always something else. They always gave you a little something more, even in there so called darkest hour (Coventry). If they come back it won't be like it was, they will bring new engergy to those tunes. Go back and listen to the various changes through out there history, it would be another change in that history. You can't go back, but it would be glorious to hear those four play together again would it not?

Every time I hear Phish in the last few years it just pisses me off, makes me angry and feel betrayed. After listening to Treys comments I can once again listen to them without becoming bitter. Anyone who thinks they are not going to be as good as they once were is nutty. Do you think they have forgotten how to rock? Look at the stuff mike and Paige are doing solo...that stuff is pretty good. Trey rocks some days and Sucks some days solo but I thik the hardcore drugs had an effect. When you put them together they will know what to do. No worries. It sounds like Trey misses it as much as we do. he may not be a Sith after all. That's only great if they can play great. I'm thankful to say that I went to almost no shows after 1996 when they were still good, innovative, and wanted to be on the road. Trey's downward spiral was so thorough and annoying that it rivals Tom Cruise's decent. I can't recall seeing anyone fall and abuse their fan base so badly as Trey did with Phish in the end- to the point where at their final show they sold tickets in the parking lot to fans who didn't have tickets, and told people over the radio who had tickets but weren't in yet that they would not be admitted. Then they screwed up the final song and had to start over. Totally unprofessional and abusive of their fanbase.

Hopefully he's got his shit together and will focus on quality playing and material instead of the wanking garbage that was featured in their final years.

jivetalkinphil... c'mon man... blaming Trey for how the music sounded at the end is one thing, but blaming Trey for how the whole ticket situation at Coventry was handled? Give me a break. As if he (or the rest of the band or either production company) had ANY control over the Vermont State Police telling them to make the annoucement or the show would be shut down. The fact that they still sold tickets at the door despite the VT authorities telling them to send everyone in line away is indicative of how 99.9% of the decisions the band made had the phans best interests at heart. Bashing Trey for the music at the end is within everyone's right. Bashing Trey for the annoucement, the selling of tickets at the door, the rain, the road conditions, the mud, etc. is misinformed and just plain ignorant.

Coming from someone whom has taken a long time viewing these boards and seeing that most comments bring a feeling of complete dissapointment. I now after many many years of just sitting back and reading these posts (Including on PT which I choose to never participate in), that I need to put in my two cents (first post ever).

This is not a competition and if you can say anything negative on this board you dont deserve to be a part of this bands overall purpose. The lack of understanding that the 'majority' (everyone should not take offense to this, you know who you are) of you have is absolutely selfish.

When they come back, enjoy the love and togetherness that they can bring upon the overall energy that we all posses. This is the basis of our past incredible experiences. I love all of you. Just try and bring a positive energy upon this opportunity and disreguard those that are just trying to start conflict (karma will give them what they deserve in time). Nobody owns this music, Phish does not want pompous ass kids counting the shows they've seen. Yeah you have seen blah blah blah many shows but how many do you remember every moment of? Stick your all your ticket stubs on your wall, nobody really cares except for you, especially the band.

It will happen and it will be incredible, just dont make it your selfish experience. You are all incredible and I will make no more posts after this one, insult it or embrace it, no skin off my back. To all those who get it, I will see you all soon in the future to truly enjoy what will be an emotional orgasm. Peace and love will evolve this world into a better place, those who dont believe in this will not have souls that will live on to see it. I hope that atleast one person understands this message and I wish to see all that bring positive energy in the mere future. Thanks for reading the theory of a man whom has truly tried to increase the karma of our people, because we need it! Oh yeah and ........... HELL YES!!!!!!!!!

Domer, I would like to congragulate you on one of the best, most emotional correct post on this website. If that was truly your first post, retire now and leave with a 1.000 batting average. This website (and scene, whatever that word means anymore) has become inundated with people who have drifted over from "the other side" of music. People who are in it for the glory, people who want to go home and say, "AHHHH!!! I saw Phish!! Arn't you jealous? Trey signed my ticket stub, now I'm the coolest kid in the history of kids!!" If anyone was paying attention the last 20 - 30 years, (Young people like me can still pay attention, I'm 25, just read a book!) you'd be able to notice that when people started to come to "heady" shows, or "scene" shows because it became the "cool" thing or the "roo" thing to do, thats when it got shady and not so great. The GD in the early to mid nineties, Phish after the hiatus (even a little before), and the Roo after the first couple. I'm not saying that the music sucked, but it definately suffered from the wack scene. The amazing music comes from amazing musicians first, but in comes from an amazing crowd as well. The musicians can feel the vibe from the crowd, and if its a shitty vibe, its gonna be shitty music. Enough Said!!

Phish at Bonnaroo? Someone give this moron thumbs down. Bonaroo's broke, and they shouldn't fix it. I'm feelin' a 20 show run in Summer 09'... first song back; 2001> Antelope.

I went to 13 Panic shows a couple of years ago and was overall disappointed.

After the first show i thought, "why in hell did i come on tour with these guys" Then the next night, they kicked ass. I sorta got what people see. After 13 shows, about 4 of them i enjoyed, and they happened to be the shows all the "true Panic fans' complained about.

I've toured with The Grateful Dead, Phish, SCI, and Panic.

The Dead were great as long as you knew how to watch out for yourself.

Phish, was fun and i would see them again , the crowd was younger, on more emotionally de-stabilizing drugs, and some violence. More Rock & Roll in attitude.

SCI was happy, like fields and flowers but I think theyre the luckiest band ever for making it as big as they did.

The Panic shows i met alot of cokeheads and people selling this fake ecstasy called Mollie.Sorta a bad scene and i wouldn't go to a show again. Theyre the perfect band for Bonnaroo.

60+ shows spring-Summer 09. End of April-Aug.- You are all nuts if you think Treys lost his ability to play, do any of you jackasses even listen to him. But Shanky your right, the scene got that way though back in like 97-98. I quit going in 2000 altogether cause of fuckwads on tour in 99. Kids beating each other up with skateboards, selling bad dope, cops beating people asses in Va. beach, it was nuts. Seeing kids crying losing their shit, I remember seeing a girl in Memphis in like 97 ish like that. Phish became the Wolds Biggest Party and unfortunately with that comes alot of assholes. To be honest though had as much fun at IT as I had at about any show. The vibe was great and everyone was thinking 20 more years, we were pulling the tribes together, and it all went to hell.

I WISH IT COULD BE BACK THE OTHER WAY, BUT WHATS DISSOLVED AIN'T COMING BACK TODAY, CLOSE YOUR EYES AND WISH THAT IT WOULD, CLOSE YOUR EYES AND WISH THAT IT WOULD,,,,

I agree with everyone is promoting to bring it back to Limestone. Its a beautiful drive, they can play the tower till the sun comes up, and some of my favorite phishin' experiences have been there. The everglades wouldn't be to bad for New Years however. Domer 115 Amen brother!!!!

we just gotta remember the four guys involved. don't want them to do it if their hearts not in it. life's to short for that.
