Phish Atlanta Setlist & The Skinny – Night Two

Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta hosted the second of two consecutive nights of Phish on Saturday evening. Expectations were high coming off an exemplary show at the venue Friday night, and on Saturday the quartet didn’t disappoint, delivering another satisfying performance – especially for those with an affinity for improvisation.

The show began with frequent opener “Runaway Jim” immediately providing guitarist Trey Anastasio the chance to let off some fierce guitar soloing that matched the hot Atlanta air. The bubbly “Undermind” that came next saw spirited back-and-forth interplay between Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell. After an all- original night before, bassist Mike Gordon stepped to the mic to lead the band through a take on the bluegrass tune “Nellie Kane,” adding to the sparse number of covers played thus far this tour.

The fourth ever performance of the new original “Blaze On” again gave Anastasio ample road to stretch out on with drummer Jon Fishman holding down the infectious rhythm. McConnell took a turn at leading the band through his “Halfway to the Moon” which quickly saw Anastasio take command of a brief but melodic outro jam. “Ocelot” then mellowed its way into a setlist for the first time this summer, gradually picking up steam behind Anastasio’s rapid- fire delivery of notes. A long pause for Fish to hydrate and some Trey and Page banter preceded “Heavy Things” that ended with a “Happy Birthday” quote from Anastasio, presumably for Jerry Garcia. The intensity rose with the peak filled “Theme From The Bottom” that gently oozed into “Run Like An Antelope.” All four members locked in just as “Antelope” reached a frenzied climax under Chris Kuroda’s storm of lights bringing the first half to a close.

The well received opening notes of “Tweezer” signaled the start of the second set and moments later Gordon was using synthed-out bass tones to navigate the band into dark and funky jam territory. The improvisation moved to a blissfully sublime segment in which Anastasio introduced a theme that both McConnell and Gordon quickly latched on to, patiently propelled by Trey’s soft MuTron-effect tone. The jam ultimately drew the song beyond the 25-minute mark, shifting several gears and hitting a manic pinnacle driven by Anastasio’s soaring guitar over an unrelenting rhythm. A final turn back into deconstructed darkness initiated by Gordon dropped into a delay loop wobble that turned into “Waiting All Night.”

The song from Wingsuit offered a breather after the expansive “Tweezer” journey. An upbeat “Backwards Down The Number Line” (and subtle birthday reference) reenergized the set with Fish matching Trey’s nimble picking. The darkness reemerged with the subsequent “Carini” that dove into a short but intense movement that effortlessly segued into “Waste.” The second much-needed breather in the second set gave way to the funk tinged “Sand” that brought the second impressive jam of the evening, as the foursome stretched the song out behind Trey’s MuTron- supported riffing. The blisteringly stand-out set closed with a fierce “Tweezer Reprise.” The Velvet Underground’s “Rock And Roll” filled the encore slot, closing the show with another rare cover this summer.
