Trombone Shorty Among Allman Brothers Guests At Beacon

The Allman Brothers Band welcomed a cavalcade of guests to the stage on Wednesday night, their eighth of 14 sold-out shows at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Most of the guests were extended family members, while the evening also saw a sit-in from New Orleans's great Trombone Shorty.

"Statesboro Blues" kicked off the show, just one of four songs the band would play without any guests. Percussionist Bobby Allende subbed in for Marc Quinones on "You Don't Love Me." "Woman Across The River" led into the run's first "Stormy Monday." Allende then returned in Quinones's spot on "End Of The Line." Another "True Gravity" was followed by a "That's What Love Will Make You Do" that saw contributions from The Juke Horns, guitarist Scott Sharrard (Greg Allman), bassist Lincoln Schleifer (Warren Haynes, Levon Helm) and drummer Denny McDermott. Schleifer and the horns stuck around for "Soulshine," while Allende helped out on the "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" set closer.

Lamar Williams Jr., the son of former Allman Brothers Band bassist Lamar Williams, guested on "Midnight Rider" to start the second set. The band then brought out Trombone Shorty for "Dusk Till Dawn" and the New Orleans upstart garnered huge applause for his feisty solo. Next, the horns came back for the three-song string of "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "And It Stoned Me." A lengthy "Les Brers In A Minor" served as the improvisational meat of the second set and featured both a bass/drums and drums segment, with Allende in the mix. Bobby was also on stage for the "No One To Run With" encore.

In other Allman Brothers Band-related news, Alan Paul - author of ONE WAY OUT: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band - will be joined by Jaimoe tonight for a Q&A session at Barnes & Noble's Upper West Side location in NYC (2289 Broadway) starting at 7 p.m.
