FULL BREAK DOWN OF PHISH'S EVENING AT JONES BEACH

For each of the last four summers Phish has either
performed at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ or Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in
Wantagh, NY but not both. This summer, Phish visited both New York City area sheds
starting with Wednesday night's gig at the Arts Center and wrapping up tonight at Jones
Beach. Phish first played Jones Beach on July 12, 1992 as part of the inaugural H.O.R.D.E.
Tour. Tonight's performance marked the band's 14th at the waterfront venue.
The two big stories of the evening were the weather and the improvisation at the beginning
of the second set. Rain enveloped Southern Nassau County around 6:30 p.m. and didn't let
up fully until just as the show ended. At points during the show, there were heavy showers
that led many attendees to jam the venue's few covered spots. The show went on unstopped
with keyboardist Page McConnell mentioning the weather and that the band would solider on
despite the rain and wind. Stormy weather brought back bad memories for locals who saw the
theater take a beating for Hurricane Sandy back in October.
Phish dusted off the fitting "Water In The Sky" for the first time since June 19, 2012 as
well as the water-referencing "A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing" for only the ninth time ever
during tonight's first set. Tour debuts in the first set included the aforementioned
songs, the instrumental "Cars Trucks Buses," Jon Fishman's "My Sweet One," Gamehendge tune
"The Sloth," "Beauty Of A Broken Heart" off McConnell's self-titled solo debut, Mike
Gordon's "Sugar Shack" and a typically beautiful "Reba" with an especially patient end
jam. "David Bowie" closed the set as the rains were coming down and featured particularly
impressive work from guitarist Trey Anastasio.
The second set started with the powerhouse combo of "Rock And Roll" > "Also Sprach
Zarathrustra" > "Tweezer" -> "Cities" -> "The Wedge." This near 20-minute "Rock And Roll"
veered into a groovy jam segment that was led in part by McConnell. Many Phish jams over
the years thrive when Anastasio leads the band by playing many notes quickly and
melodically. So far this tour, Trey seems more content to show off his impressive rhythm
skills and lets Page do the heavy lifting. Anastasio's choppy rhythms were the basis for a
full-band segue into a cover of "Cities" by Talking Heads out of a magnificent funky
"Tweezer." Once again, McConnell and Anastasio connected on the "Cities" jam as Fishman
laid down a beat that sounded quite like "The Wedge." Apparently that was a bit of
foreshadowing by the drummer since the Rift classic came next. "Wading in the
Velvet Sea" gave fans and band a chance to catch their breaths before "Character Zero"
provided a big rock finish. McConnell dedicated the "Sleeping Monkey" that started the
encore to those affected by Sandy and it led into the perfunctory "Tweezer Reprise."
We'll have a full review of Phish at Jones Beach in the coming days.
